Project Overview

Research

The project aimed to study wooden joints and their adaptation to wood design. Having picked spruce as the material, the next step was to decide on which joint type to use, and lastly, design a product that does not exceed 400x400x400 mm dimensions. There are three types of wooden joints; they are either strong or decorative or carry both of the characteristics. For instance, the dovetail joint has high mechanical strength and looks pretty. On the other hand, the mortice and tenon joint has high mechanical strength yet are not visible from the outside. After going back and forth, the lap joint was chosen for to experiment. It is the simplest joint that is decorative and beginner friendly; it has no mechanical strength, and it does not create friction to hold it in its place. Hence each piece requires wood glue application.
