Project Overview

Research

Genderlessness is not a foreign concept in Japan, since the country is known to have a long history of people testing the limits of the societal norms on femininity and masculinity through gender-fluid practices. The genderless fashion movement gained popularity and grew exponentially amongst young adults since 2015 when genderlessness started to be openly practiced by top Japanese models in fashion shows, which caught the local and international media’s attention.

WHAT IS INDIVIDUALITY?

fruitbasketpieces-04_edited_edited.png

After getting accustomed to the subculture Jendaresu-Kei “Genderless-Style”, the project started with questioning the meaning of individuality in today’s world. How do people maintain their individuality while living amongst eight billion people? Is the way people think, behave, talk, eat, walk, look, and so on a reflection of the society they are in?

HOW DO WE DEFINE OUR IDENTITY?

In the past, people's identity was determined by various factors such as; their hometown, where they live, family, religion, occupation, and the generation they belong to. However, today these factors are not valid, because the digital revolution led people to explore lifestyles that were out of reach before.

According to Vejlgaard (2010), since people have full control of their own identity and lifestyle, there is a tendency to want to be a part of a group of people who are into similar interests and lifestyles rather than going for an ethnic, national, or cultural tribe.

Gender does not define us, yet society places strict rules on gender identities. The moment someone pushes those boundaries, they face ridicule.

The project is inspired by those brave individuals, who fight for their right to look the way they feel comfortable. This story is about finding who you are and reflecting on that person inside out. To finally feel liberated and happy.
