Exhibition Review: Aaron Hiltunen and Liisa Karintaus Duo Show at TM Galleria

Updated: Aug 14, 2023

Exhibition: Aaron Hiltunen and Liisa Karintaus Location: TM Galleria (free entry) Date: 05.07.2023 — 29.07.2023

I visited the exhibition primarily to check Aaron Hiltunen's "Koneet pois metsistä" (or "Machines out of the woods" in English) series. The idea of the series was to envision a future where people would leave forests alone for 100 years. Even though I loved the concept, the first two paintings named as Metsä 1 and Metsä 2 left me underwhelmed. But I enjoyed the shapes, the color story, and the composition of the "Kallioita" as well as the sharp black lines and the contrast of the "Kuollut Raita" which you can see in the video.

Liisa Karintaus' paintings take shape based on her memory, personal experiences, and feelings. Almost every painting had a cohesive color story. Subjects were different yet as a collective - it delivers the idea of a person sharing her life with the viewer.

Frankly, the information that was at the exhibition venue was inadequate. To be more specific, there was no information about the painters or their series anywhere. I wouldn't have known anything about them if I didn't read online before visiting. Rather basic information about the paintings was printed on A4 paper with prices included. You, the visitor, are destined to go around the gallery blind without that paper. The paper shows that there were only two paintings from Aaron Hiltunen in the gallery. Yet, I was corrected that there were more. Another thing, do they have to place the number tags just above the ground level? It is not difficult to place the information and the number tag at a decent eye level for people to see. Commercial galleries exist to promote artists and sell paintings, but the visitor experience could have been more pleasant, in my opinion. Regardless of everything that was just said, if you are interested in buying art and/or not that interested in reading but looking at pretty paintings, this is the place for you.
